Kortasafn Abrahams Orteliusar var dýr bók í stóru broti og frekar óþjál í meðförum. Mönnum kom því snemma til hugar að gera bókina aðgengilegri almenningi með því að gera útdrætti úr textanum og minnka kortin. Ýmsu hefur orðið að fórna við þessa breytingu á stærð kortsins, eins og t. d. flestöllum örnefnum.The atlas, Theatrum orbis terrarum, by Ortelius was a large book and rather expensive. So it was not very long before someone got an idea to make it more accessible to the public by reducing the maps. This new version of the collection was published in many languages. Here we see a scaled down version of Ortelius' map of the north from some edition of the book.
